Confidence When Confronted
Above all else, we want confidence when confronted in our dogs. We also want our Boerboels to know if it’s not a threat, it is not a problem. What good is a pretty dog who is afraid of it’s own shadow or gets surly at their human when told a boundary? You simply can not say your dog will protect you unless you test it. Selection priority is that any dog that is bred must be proven to not only deter, but to forward when push comes to shove.
-
Farm Guardian Without Borders
Here on our farms we do not have fencing. We desire the Boerboel to stay close range and on the property with basic training. We want them to take care of small game and deter large game. We feel the Boerboel is not a breed for the Suburbs and one that should have adequate space working and maintaining a territory while staying close to their family and being an inside dog at night.
-
Peaceful Coexistence
A farm dog should be easy to live with. Part of the selection process is that the breeding prospects can peacefully coexist with their other canine siblings. They sleep together, work together, and play together. Of course, this is with teaching boundaries and not allowing other dogs to bully in the pack. A farm dog should be trusted with all members of the house, including the cats when raised around them.
-
Sporting Versatility
Outside of the farm needs, our hobby is sporting events and proving versatility in our dogs. Being able to do a variety of sports proves the biddability of our dogs. We select for dogs that do not need prior training to earn basic titles. A dog should be able to accomplish basic titles with just being shown the task 1-2 times. Sports we do include: Rally Obedience, Dock Diving, Barn Hunt, Weight Pull, Fast Cat, Conformation, Agility, and more.
Health Testing
There is no perfect dog.
Our selection process is function and working ability first. However, we do test every part of our breeding prospects, so that we can make informed decisions on how to improve the next generation. We post publicly on OFA both passing and failing scores.
With heart issues in the breed, our most important selection process with health is Advanced Cardiac. All dogs must FIRST pass an echocardiogram by a board certified Cardiologist in order to advance to the next step.
We believe dogs should not be bred before they are fully mature and have proven their joints sound after months of hard work. The minimum joint testing age is 24 months, and we prefer to wait even older if possible.
Health Tests Before Breeding:
OFA Advanced Cardiac: Echocardiogram by a board certified Cardiologist
OFA Elbows
Pennhip
OFA Shoulders
OFA Dentition
Genetic Screening with Optimal Selections or Embark
OFA Trachea
OFA Spine
OFA Patella
OFA Thyroid
OFA Blood Panel
OFA Eyes
All of our prospects are posted in the public OFA database - ofa.org
Dogs that we have health tested: The list has since doubled, but you can search the OFA database for any additional dogs that I have health tested and washed, or bred, that are not on this list.

Final Note
What we hard select for in the breeding parents, does not mean that every puppy will inherit the best of those traits. However it increases the likelihood that more puppies than not will get the genetics we are selecting for.
The breed has issues with same sex aggression, dog aggression, allergies, hip and elbow issues, cardiac issues, cancer, bad nerves, unstable temperament etc. etc. While we do our due diligence to select away from that.. this breed in the AKC standard states “an aggressive or belligerent attitude toward other dogs should not be faulted”. The reality is it exists, this breed is highly possessive, ranked top 10 worst breeds for hips and elbows on OFA, and requires an experienced owner.
